I recently came across this problem and struggled to find a fix, so now I’ve found one, here it is.
I had done a Swing Migration from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 a few months ago and thought I’d caught all the gotchas, but after enabling OMA came across another bug in the process.
The problem is that any user that existed before the migration can’t access OMA, any user created post-migration has no problems.
If you test with IE by browsing to HTTP://SERVER/OMA you receive the following error.
A System Error has occurred.
In the Event Log you get this error.
MSExchangeOMA Error 1503
An unknown error occurred while processing the current request:
Message: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: startIndex
Source: mscorlib
The problem lies in the fact that the HomeMTA attribute for the original user is pointing to a deleted object.
In order to fix the problem you have to use ADSIEdit. (Don’t do it unless you know what you’re doing!)
In ADSIEdit, browse to the users container and right-click on a working user and select properties, go down the list till you find homeMTA and double-click it. Copy the contents. You’ll notice it starts with…
CN=Microsoft MTA,CN=SERVERNAME......
Next get properties of one of the faulty users, find homeMTA. It contains the wrong value, starting…
CN=Microsoft MTA\0ADEL
Paste the correct value, hit OK, and you’re good to go. No reboots or service restarts required.

I’m looking into starting an IT Support company based in Ayr, and feel a little market research is in order.
The current plan is to offer support to both Home Users and Businesses, with the option of a monthly fee for ongoing maintenance.
Here are my questions:
- What would be considered a fair hourly rate? £20, £30, £40 or more?
- Should I even be considering an hourly rate? Would a flat fee per job type be a better option?
- Does the Microsoft Certification warrant charging a higher rate?
- Should there be a different hourly rate for businesses?
- What would be the best wat to price an ongoing maintenance contract?

For thousands of years, practicioners of Magick have been scorned by men of science. Their beliefs ridiculed, called superstition and generally beaten about the head by Occam’s Razor. Now, having given us Quantum Physics, thereby providing a mechanism for Magick to exist, these same scientists are having to eat large amounts of humble pie.
I’m not a physicist, so I’ll keep the maths to a minimum and try and keep it simple. (Mainly to stop my head from exploding! ;-)) Let’s start with a brief description of how Quantum Physicists see the universe. Everything that exists does so as a quantum wave, the reality we observe is created by interaction of these waves. Every trace of energy or matter is a consequence of an infinite number of quantum waves overlapping. What this means is that everything is connected. Altering one of these quantum waves, by even a minute amount, could be enough to create large physical changes in the world of matter and energy which we inhabit.
It is worth mentioning at this point that in the quantum world, nothing is absolute! Everything is governed by Probability. That is you cannot say with certainty that some quanta will be in a specific place or state, only infer from the probabilities involved. This also brings into play the concept of the “Superposition” - ie a quantum element exists in all its possible states simultaneously until it is measured (observed). The act of measurment is what decides the status of the quanta. The Observer, just by looking has altered something, and this miniscule change has the capability of changing ever larger things.
“As Above, So Below”
A phrase you’ve all no doubt heard, is suprisingly apt when applied to Quantum Physics. What happens in the microcosm happens in the macrocosm and vice-versa. Or what you believe in your mind happens in the material universe. Much like a butterflies wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the planet, affecting a single particle in the quantum world (microcosm) is enough to affect things here in the material world (macrocosm).
Because the human mind is made from the same quantum wave functions as the rest of the universe and all these waves are connected and interact with each other, we have the ability to affect anything we wish.
But how does one observe a quanta in order to cause a change? How, if you have mastered the previous question, can you know what to affect in the quantum world in order to create the desired effect in the material?
The answer is not to even try! You don’t need to know about Newton’s Laws of Motion to ride a bike, or Boyle’s Laws of Thermodynamics to boil a kettle.
Visualization is still key. By visualising your goal you begin to build a resonance between the quantum wave functions that define your existance and those you want to affect. As I’ve already said, it’s the interaction between the wave functions that creates matter and energy in the universe, so if you’re in control of your own waves you can do anything. You don’t need to know about quantum physics, just the Will and the Belief will suffice, your subconcious knows how.
So another BT Router (en5861) blew up! It was replaced with a Netgear DG384 and everything was looking fine. Apart from one thing - a Netgear FVS318 sits on the network and creates a VPN Tunnel to a sub-office, allowing them to connect to a terminal server. The VPN was up, but a ping showed packet loss of 40% and noone at the sub-office could connect to the Terminal Server.
After much head scratching and googling I found the solution and thought I’d share it. (Or at least keep a record for when it happens again and I don’t remember what the fix was 
)
The MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) setting on the router was set to 1492, and was set to 1500 on the VPN Endpoints. I found a couple of articles suggesting packet fragmentation was causing the problem because the MTU on the firewall was bigger than that on the router.
I set the 318s MTU to 1400 at both ends and suddenly 0% packet loss! Great, got the sub-office to try Remote Desktop, but this still didn’t work. A bit of trial and error later, and the magic number for MTU we found was 1472.
With the reliability of the EN5861 I’m sure this is something that’s happened before and will happen again. Has anyone else had similar problems or different cures?
Imagine you could stop time, walk through walls, fly, control a computer with your mind or hear peoples thoughts! Would you be a villain? Or a Hero?
I mentioned Heroes in my Top 5 - Sci Fi earlier this week and thought I’d give you all some more information in the hope you’ll go and check it out, it’s a great show! I’ll give an overview of the characters whilst trying not to give any major spoilers.
The show’s basic theme is people are being born with superhuman abilities through a quirk of the genetic code (evolution or engineering?) and a nuclear explosion in the heart of New York. In the course of trying to prevent this catastrophe the Heroes paths cross, questions get answered, new questions are raised, alliances formed (and broken). This is one compelling drama! The “To be continued” text at the end of each episode always seems to come too early, the next episode too far in the future! Oh for the ability to control the flow of time - just to see next weeks episode sooner.
- Hiro Nakamura - A Japanese office worker who can bend space and time, allowing him to transport himself to different places, freeze time, and travel to the future or past. We see two different Hiros (so far) - the nerdy one of the present, just came into his powers, and the mysterious, sword wielding, older Hiro from several years in the future. Hiro’s adventures are in part led by a prophetic comic book called 9th Wonders, drawn by
- Isaac Mendez - Isaac is an artist and an heroin addict based in New York. When he is high, he has access to his amazing power, drawing the future. His works include 9th Wonders, portraying Hiro and his friend Ando, the apparent death of a cheerleader, the destruction of New York in a massive explosion and a young man who can fly.
- Peter Petrelli - Thinks he can fly! Also based in New York, Peter is a nurse looking after terminally ill patient. After trying to convice his brother Nathan that he can fly, and a stay in hospital, Nathan tells him they both can. Peter is met by (future) Hiro, told to “Save the cheerleader, save the world”, and that he must talk to Isaac. Whilst with Isaac, Peter appears to be able to draw the future, suggesting he can copy others powers.
- Claire Bennett - The indestructible cheerleader lives in Odessa, Texas and seems to be able to heal herself of any injury. She has her friend Zach film her injuries and regenerations, Zach thinks it’s cool, Claire thinks she’s a freak. The video tape is found by
- Mr Bennett - the cheerleader’s father, who seems an ordinary businessman but in reality is involved with an organization intent on controlling the Heroes. He doesn’t have any powers of his own, but uses mysterious coloured gentleman to (at the very least) block others powers, such as those of
- Matt Parkman - a bumbling LA cop, with a history of failing the exam required to become a detective. Matt discovers he can read other’s thoughts, which gets him seconded to the FBI to try to help catch a serial killer called
- Sylar - he appears to have telekinetic ability and a penchant for removing peoples brains. I’m sure he will play a major part of the unfolding saga.
There are many characters, including important ones, that I haven’t mentioned in order not to spoil anything, and the relationships between all the characters is much more complex than i could convey in such a cursory overview. If you’ve access to any of the channels showing Heroes, I suggest you check it out. You can see it from the beginning on SciFi - 19th May for example. Or wait till it’s released on DVD, which I hope will be soon.
I won’t recommend watching this from anywhere apart from episode one! The story builds on every previous episode and a lot would be lost starting somewhere in the middle.
